In Philadelphia there have been at least sixty-four transit buildings that have been decommissioned by the Southeast Pennsylvania Transport Authority, or SEPTA, since 1979. This was a direct result of decline in the use of railroads and public transportation having to cut stations to cut costs. There was a growing inventory of train buildings that were being left to decay from lack of funds and minimal maintenance, some of which still had active lines associated with them. This building type has a lot of potential for preservation and reuse, and hasn't received a lot of attention in other research or design strategies.
