The study presented herewith deals with the development of Jewish education in the late Colonial period to the last quarter of the 19th century. The author's attention was drawn to the challenging problem involved in determining the history of Jewish education in an American Jewish community from its earliest beginnings to the present day. He therefore decided to devote himself to a study of the Jewish religious and educational institutions in Philadelphia from the Sephardic-German Jewish period to the beginning of the Russian-Jewish immigration to the United States of America.
