The project will be implemented initially in multiple sites in Limpopo Province as a model for replication more broadly. BFI-SA is a collaborative multi-agency partnership under the overall sponsorship of the Department of Education. The International Literacy Institute is a partner of BFI-SA.Publication PDK: New Directions in Adult Basic Education(2010-02-01) Literacy.orgProfessional Development Kit (PDK) was funded by the U.S Department of Education in collaboration with SRI, International, to create professional development tools for adult educators. Employing case-based instruction in the context of facilitated adult education teacher professional development, PDK can adult educators explore and develop their practice in new ways and to investigate new materials and strategies for instruction. With video case studies of adult education classrooms; online tools for practitioners to structure their own cases; resources that include a knowledge database, digests, portfolio, group discussion and class products; and staff development and user guides; PDK provides resources and a framework to support participants efforts to generate questions and brainstorm solutions to challenging professional situations. The initiative which kicks off in the Limpopo Province - serving as a model for implementation nationwide - will assist to overcome the countrys major illiteracy challenge through the combined power of local (mother-tongue) language learning and multimedia technology. The easy-to-use multimedia material has been developed to date in Sepedi, Tshivenda, xiTsonga and English, aligned with ABET levels 1 through 3, and also includes computer literacy skills.
