Abstract

This dissertation concerns the paintings of a Flemish artist called the "Master of the Legend of Saint Lucy" after a painting in the Church of Saint James in Bruges bearing a date of 1480. From this starting point many other works were assigned to this anonymous artist in the 20th century. The introduction reviews the history of attributions to this artist. The first chapter evaluates the attributions with the goal of considering their correctness. The second chapter considers the chronology of the accepted works and argues for the development of the artist's style. Chapter three looks at the stylistic and iconographic sources for the artist. Chapter four examines the possibility of Spanish patronage and influence in this body of work. The final chapter argues from patronage and chronology for identifying the anonymous artist as Jan de Hervy, who worked in Bruges in the last quarter of the fifteenth century. An Appendix provides a catalogue of the works discussed.
