Abstract

Skin is a habitat for trillions of micro-organisms that are collective referred to as the skin microbiome. The skin microbiome plays many important roles in human health, one of which is resistance to colonization by pathogens such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus(MRSA). While murine models are the most common animal models used to study skin microbiota, pigs are also an attractive model organism due to histologic similarities between pig and human skin. Pigs can also be colonized by MRSA, a fact which I exploit in this body of work to uncover novel bacterial inhibitors of S. aureus. I focus on a few of these porcine bacterial inhibitors and study in depth on the molecular causes that might lead to their antimicrobial activity, as well as the molecular response by S. aureus. These findings enhance our understanding of microbial community dynamics on skin and present opportunities for novel therapies against S. aureus colonization. iv
