Program note: I wrote these two compositions for woodwind chamber ensembles: one for woodwind quintet and one for woodwind trio for my dissertation in fulfillment of my PhD at the University of Pennsylvania. I am immensely grateful to the Seattle-based woodwind quintet, Winds5, and the woodwind trio from the Seattle Collaborative Orchestra for their commitment to premiering these works on Seattle-based KingFM’s live radio show Northwest Focus Live. Both compositions are deeply shaped by the lively culture and folk music of the Pacific Northwest. With these compositions, I aim to blend the sounds of this region into pieces that reflect its people and landscapes.
