Relying on extensive archival research and oral history interviews, she looks at these individuals considering gender (something rarely done), class, and the time period in which they worked. These social scientists all entered their fields between 1890 and 1935 and, according to Wilson, were motivated by a desire to improve the situation for African American workers throughout the United States.Publication Minority Serving Colleges Deserve More Respect(2009-10-11) Gasman, MarybethPublication Hurricane Katrina and Our Nation’s Black Colleges(2007-01-01) Gasman, Marybeth; Drezner, Noah DPublication Telling a Better Story About Minority Serving Institutions(2013-01-01) Gasman, Marybeth; Conrad, Clifton F.; Bowman, III, Nelson; Nguyen, Thai-Huy; Samayoa, Andres; Lundberg, ToddPublication Truth, Generalizations, and Stigmas: An Analysis of the Media's Coverage of Morris Brown College and Black Colleges Overall(2007-06-01) Gasman, MarybethA content analysis of the media’s coverage of Morris Brown College’s situation suggests that the media have made and continues to make generalizations about Black colleges based on the faults of a few. These generalizations call into question the very existence of Black colleges. Although news reports began with appropriate questions about the leadership, financial stability, fundraising ability, and quality of the board of trustees at Morris Brown, they quite frequently attributed the institution’s problems to Black colleges as a whole.Publication America's Public HBCUs: A Four State Comparison of Institutional Capacity and State Funding Priorities(2014-01-01) Boland, William; Gasman, MarybethPublication Educating All Students: Minority Serving Institutions(2013-01-01) Gasman, Marybeth; Conrad, Clifton F.Publication An HBCU-Based Educational Approach for Black College Student Success: Toward a Framework with Implications for All Institutions(2014-11-01) Gasman, Marybeth; Arroyo, Andrew TThis conceptual study builds an institution-focused, non-Eurocentric, theoretical framework of black college student success. Specifically, the study synthesizes the relevant empirical research on the contributions historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) have made for black student success, leading to an original model that all institutions can adapt to their contexts. Significantly, this is the first HBCU-based theoretical model to appear in the academic literature. The study concludes with several implications for research and practice, including testing the model and using it in institutional planning.
