Abstract

The Gates Foundation today is one of the world’s largest philanthropic foundations and has committed significant funding to India and globally. The literature on philanthropic organizations’ funding allocation strategies is limited, emphasizing the importance of an analysis of the Gates Foundation’s global and India-specific funding strategy. This paper conducts a descriptive and regression analysis of the Gates Foundation's funding allocation strategy from 1994 to 2025 for global and India-specific grants. Historically, the Foundation has heavily focused on America, directed most of its funding towards a narrow set of topics, and steadily increased its total active projects given volatile, but overall increasing, funding. The years 2006 to 2009, America, and certain topics in healthcare and agricultural development are statistically significant factors for predicting the Foundation's funding strategy. Future research should identify causal relationships and additional interactions between existing and new variables.
