Abstract

Diabetes type 2 is a chronic disease with serious consequences when not properly managed. It is the most prevalent form of the condition, accounting for 90 to 95% of all cases. By 2030 diabetes will likely affect nearly 40 million Americans. Therefore, successful management is paramount to assuage this public health concern. For many people, drastic lifestyle changes are essential to successful diabetes management. Improved eating habits and dietary patterns, regular physical activity, weight management, and mental health support are critical pillars of successful diabetes management. Mindful eating is associated with various positive health outcomes, including normalizing eating behaviors, maintaining a healthy weight, and positively affecting mental health. This paper explores how mindful eating may support the lifestyle pillars for successful condition management and help with developing a healthy and sustainable lifestyle. The work investigates the potential practical applications of mindful eating in traditional diabetes nutrition education by dietitians and diabetes educators working with diverse populations and sheds light on areas ripe for further research.
