Abstract
Abstract In a time of unprecedented change, we need leaders who inspire hope, build trust, and unite others around a bold vision for a better future. Yet as expectations rise, many leaders struggle to sustain the energy needed to fulfill their full potential. This capstone, grounded in positive psychology and leadership science, makes the case that to lead others well, leaders must first nurture and protect their own vitality. Rather than focusing on burnout and what drains leaders, this literature review explores how to systematically build what energizes them. The framework examines how leaders can cultivate physical, emotional, psychological, and spiritual energies to sustain high levels of positive leadership. Evidence from empirical studies and workplace contexts reveals that vital leaders facilitate exceptional employee engagement, employee wellbeing and team performance. When leaders proactively “keep their tanks full”, they are able to be consistent in demonstrating leadership behaviors that unlock follower potential and foster collective wellbeing. They create growth-promoting environments where teams can flourish. At its core, this capstone offers a hopeful roadmap: leaders can lead boldly without burning out, becoming a force of light – for their followers, their organizations and their communities.
