“Wanting a Better Future:” Persistence, Mindset and Academic Success After Graduating from Saint Martin De Porres High School~A Cristo Rey Network High School

Mary Ann Vogel, University of Pennsylvania

Abstract

Year after year, high school administrators learn that the alumni, whom they knew were firmly prepared for the post-secondary experience, leave college before graduating. In contrast, ironically, other alumni for whom they were concerned, proceed steadfastly through the challenges of college and ultimately complete their post-secondary academic program. Who graduates, who does not, and why seems to be a riddle for the ages. Through a quantitative study highlighting the first four graduating classes of Saint Martin de Porres High School in Cleveland Ohio and drawing from the results of a series of logistic regression models studying alumni socio-demographic and academic achievement data while enrolled in high school, alumni results of the Grit Short Scale Survey and Theories of Intelligence Scale-Adult Form Test, and current post-secondary enrollment data from the National Student Clearinghouse this study explored correlations between variables to determine if alumni persistence and mindset had a positive effect on post-secondary academic program enrollment and eventual degree attainment. Findings showed that within this study, alumni who held self-reflected high degrees of persistence or growth mindset were not more likely to directly enroll or graduate from a post-secondary academic program than their peers. Findings did prove strong correlations between alumni Composite ACT Assessment scores and High School GPA and their post-secondary academic success. This study does contribute to further discussion of the impact of personal motivation, academic achievement while in high school, financial security of college-age young adults, and parental educational attainment on the eventual post-secondary academic success of an individual graduating from specifically the national network of Cristo Rey High Schools or in general our nation’s inner-city schools.
