    2019 Global Think Tank Summit

    The Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program (TTCSP) of the Lauder Institute at the University of Pennsylvania and Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV) hosted the 2019 Global Think Tank Summit under the theme “Managing Global Turbulence and Transitions: The Role of Think Tanks.”The summit was held December 11th-13th, 2019 at the Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV) main office in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The most influential and innovative think tanks from around the world gathered to discuss the role of think tanks in increasing global turbulence and transitions, such as navigating the new world order, popular discontent, democracy and dictators in the digital age, climate change, food and water security, trade disputes and domestic and global political tensions. This summit created a unique forum for think tanks from across each region of the world to collaborate, exchange ideas and best practices, and wrestle with the contemporary political and policy issues confronting civil society globally. Its diversity and collaborative format fostered an environment in which think tanks challenged and learned from one another. Through constructive discourse, think tanks reflected on their work thus far and collaborated ways in which they can better approach the current contentious political and social climate. The summit aimed to provide think tanks reinvigorated drive to engage in quality research and analysis practices to confront present-day challenges.

    Think Tank Talent For the Future Forum 2021 Report

    In July 2021, think tanks from around the world met in Dubai, United Arab Emirates at the Think Tank Talent for the Future Forum to discuss the strategic and operational challenges they face in recruiting and retaining talent for their organizations. The objective was to identify effective strategies that will help prepare think tanks for the fast-paced and increasingly complex public policy environment in which all policy research organizations must now operate. Historically, the primary competition for think tank scholars, dollars and influence was from other think tanks; today, they must compete with consulting, law and public relations firms. The Global Forum attracted 102 participants from think tanks and other sectors in July, 2021 including over 65 senior think tank scholars and executive diverse group of think tanks from across the globe. The global Think Tank Talent for the Future Forum will provide thought leaders, resources, and cutting-edge research to help think tanks develop critical and beneficial strategies so they can thrive in today’s highly competitive marketplace of ideas and policy advice.

    Virtual 2021 “Why Think Tanks Matter In Times of Crisis” Forum

    The 2021 Virtual Why Think Tanks Matter Forum was hosted by the Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program (TTCSP) on Friday, January 28, 2021. Think Tank scholars and policymakers gathered to discuss policies that were created and exacerbated by the pandemic as well as those that required foresight beyond the pandemic. 20 Think Tanks from around the world showcased examples of supporting and facilitating government policies during the pandemic when policy makers called on think tanks to perform their indispensable role of assisting policy making in times of crises. Think Tank executives also addressed the question of “Why Think tanks Matter” now and in the future and provided ideas on how the public and government can be served in the best way possible.

    Think Tanks & Pandemic Policy Advice (2020-21)

    On April 7, 2020 375 think tank executives and scholars from 163 think tanks and 86 countries came together at the start of the COVID19 crisis to demonstrate their solidarity and commitment to save lives and livelihoods for the first Global Think Tank Town Hall. The meeting was followed by a call for action from the leading think tanks around the world to support those on the front lines with innovative policies, programs, and action. Titled Saving Lives and Livelihoods, this series of conferences was a momentous effort to provide timely and the most up-to-date information to policymakers and extend innovative ideas on how to mitigate the impacts of the pandemic. Over 1200 executives and 500 organizations from around the world participated in this endeavor to continue the shared objective of bridging knowledge and policy at a time when it is needed more than ever. This report outlines specific case examples of think tanks impacting governmental policies during the pandemic. It includes case descriptions from think tanks who facilitated government pandemic policies around the world, regional analysis of the input from participants in the Town Halls, including the concerns they raise, recommendations they make, and the role of their think tanks in impacting governmental policies in their respective regions. There are 63 cases from 37 countries in the following report. We hope you find them helpful as we continue to deal with the impact of this Hydrademic.

    Women in Think Tank Report 2021

    On March 25, 2021, the Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program of the Lauder Institute at the University of Pennsylvania hosted the Women in Think Tank Forums under the title “Breaking the Glass Ceiling in the Ivory Tower: The Role of Women in Think Tanks and Policy Advice.” The purpose of this event was to unite women in think tanks from across the globe to discuss the challenges and opportunities that women in the think tank sector face. The forum also discussed tangible and actionable solutions that would benefit women in the think tank industry.
