Abstract

This is the first volume of the University of Pennsylvania Working Papers in Linguistics, published by the University of Pennsylvania Linguistics Club. In the fall of 1993, the Linguistics Club decided it would like to promote the recognition of the fine innovative work produced here, and also to contribute to the traditions of linguistics research that the Penn Linguistics Department is well known for. To this end, we have started the Penn Working Papers in Linguistics as a forum to which staff, students and researchers with an on-going affiliation to the Department can submit previously unpublished work, or work in progress, for comment, discussion and feedback from their peers in the wider linguistics community. We would like to think a number of people for their help in getting the Penn Working Papers in Linguistics off the ground. In particular, we would like to express our thanks to Tony Kroch and Sabine Iatridou for support of the project at all stages; also to Gene Buckley, George Cardona and Don Ringe, and the University of Pennsylvania GSAC, who have all contributed generously. In addition, special thanks are due to David Embick. A number of other graduate students have also contributed generously of their time and expertise in reviewing submissions, and we are indebted to them. Their efforts have been crucial to the success of this volume. As editors, we hope that we have assembled a product that everyone associated with the Penn Working Papers in Linguistics can be proud of.
